What is UGR and why does it matter for office lighting?

UGR (Unified Glare Rating) is the international standard for evaluating discomfort glare in interior lighting. It's critical for office environments where workers spend extended hours:
- UGR ≤ 16: Excellent — suitable for precision work like technical drawing
- UGR ≤ 19: Good — standard for general office work and computer use (EN 12464-1)
- UGR ≤ 22: Acceptable — for corridors and non-critical work areas only
- Lower UGR is achieved through: recessed fixtures, micro-prismatic diffusers, and proper fixture placement
- High UGR causes eye strain, headaches, and reduced productivity in office workers
